Book launch at St Mark's, Bellerive

On Sunday 25 November, Bishop Harrower launched a substantial book by long-time Bellerive parishioner and local resident and historian, John Sargent.

John has been working on St Mark's Bellerive Reflections: Looking Forward, Looking Back for the past two years.

It goes through the early days of 19th Century ministry in Kangaroo Point, when the original Chapel of Ease was built, through to the building of the current church in Bellerive in 1903, and to the present.

This book has plenty in it for the history buff. Lots of interesting local history (both Bellerive and the wider Eastern Shore) and accounts of fascinating church events, burial records, and some great pictures. The book is very much about people, as well as buildings, and some wonderful characters emerge along the way.

Unlike many history books this book is just as interested in the future as the past.

As the author writes, ‘I have written this book in the hope that it may become a part of our future vision…enjoy the journey from the past and look forward to our ongoing spiritual journey together.’

For the current and future ministry of St Mark’s, it is a wonderful asset to have a book like this – as we learn from the past and its great characters and heroes in the church, and as we plan for the next phase of our faith and life together.
