Sing we and chant it!
Interested in Gregorian chant?
Elizabeth Eden, Director of Music at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Hobart, formed a Gregorian Schola in May 2007.
The Schola comprises male and female voices and is under the umbrella of St Mary's Cathedral, but it is hoped that its membership and involvement will be non-denominational. The group operates for several months at a time, not all year round, and sings for occasional liturgical and concert commitments.
The emphasis in the group is on developing skills in chanting, with members expected to become proficient in reading independently and to work individually between rehearsals. Rehearsal times are negotiable, to suit the singers' availability.
Elizabeth's commitment to Gregorian chant includes regular attendance at international masterclasses for choir directors, held annually in France under the direction of Dom Daniel Saulnier OSB, a world authority in the interpretation of chant based at the Abbey of Solesmes.
Locally, Elizabeth has presented workshops in Gregorian chant for the Australian National Choral Association and the Festival of Voices.
There will be two opportunities to hear the Schola sing in the weekend of 12-13 April.
On 12 April, the Schola will promote Gregorian chant in an unlikely setting, as part of Medieval Mayhem at the Heritage Park, Geeveston.
On Sunday 13 April, the Schola will present a short Twilight Concert at 4.30 pm at Sacred Heart Church, New Town, featuring a selection of chants from the liturgies of Advent to Pentecost. After this concert, the Schola will be in recess until September, with the next induction workshops for new members being held at the beginning of October.
