A Spectator's Guide to World Views: Ten ways of understanding life. Smart, S. (Ed.) (2007), Blue Bottle Books, Sydney, NSW

In this latest offering in the Spectator's Guide series the subject turns to philosophy. Simon Smart introduces the topic by defining 'world view' and explaining its importance.

Ten different ways of understanding life are subsequently explored: Christianity, Modernism, Postmodernism, Utilitarianism, Humanism, Liberalism, Feminism, Relativism, New Age Spirituality and Consumerism.

Each chapter is structured to include a straightforward explanation of the philosophy with its central beliefs outlined and a short history. Relevant examples from current films, literature and poetry are used.

There is also a section on any contact and departure from orthodox Christian thought. A topical issue is explored in each chapter, with discussion and perception questions provided.

Short biographies of the contributing authors are provided (particularly important in a book which espouses the importance of awareness of a world view), some of whom, including John Dickson, are involved in teaching at the Macquarie Christian Studies Institute.

I enjoyed reading this book. Although not exhaustive, it is a suitable introduction to philosophy and would be particularly useful to those studying Philosophy and Ethics at High School level or Religion and Philosophy at TCE level.

Another book to watch out for, if you are taking up the study of philosophy and ethics at school level is Engebretson and Elliott's, Chaos or Clarity.
