A very generous gift for Mission to Seafarers

In mid April the TasPorts Corporation, who control the wharves in Tasmania, handed over to the Mission to Seafarers Hobart Station a Mazda bus and a cheque. Although the vehicle is reasonably old, it has low mileage and is in very good condition.

The Hobart Chaplain, the Revd Bruce Mitchell said, 'We are delighted with this generous gift that will allow us more flexibility in the transport of seafarers from and to the Zinc Works and enable us to show seafarers a little of our beautiful city and surrounds. We could not justify purchasing a new bus as the numbers do not warrant it. This new acquisition will mean that we do not have to rely on taxis and consequently this will reduce our running costs.'

Mr Charles Scarafiotti, the Executive Manager-Marketing of TasPorts gave a cheque for $2,000 to help with running costs, raised as a result of a clean-up of scrap steel from some of the wharves.

He said that the gifts are a means of supporting the vital work of the Mission to Seafarers in caring for and ministering to those who come to our port and who bring much of our daily needs to us.

The Chaplain said that the next challenge is to find people to drive the bus, mostly of an evening. As the seating has been reduced to twelve, people holding an ordinary manual car licence would be able to drive it.

Bruce Mitchell would love to hear from potential drivers.

Sea Sunday

Please encourage your parish to pray for and remember seafarers on Sunday, 13 July and throughout the year. The Hobart Chaplain, the Revd Bruce Mitchell 6234 6016 or the Revd Aileen Fitzgerald in Burnie 6431 2780 will readily provide more aids to worship.

We will gladly welcome more volunteers and gifts to support MtS.
