Not finished yet!
50+ Bible Convention
The theme for the 50+ Bible Convention held at Rutherglen in early May was ' Finishing off well'.
While not the most encouraging title for those of us who are not yet 'finishing off' - perhaps 'Travelling Well' would have more appeal? - whatever the title, the addresses by Mike Raiter, Principal of the Bible College of Victoria, were relevant, challenging and encouraging for all ages.
Mike had the ability to lead us deeper in our thinking and understanding of some well-known scriptures. We became aware of deeper meanings besides the obvious ones and were challenged and encouraged to apply these insights to our experience of God at work in our lives.
In addition to the four scheduled Bible expositions were two sessions called 'Mike Unplugged'. In these we had free-ranging question and answer and discussion on any topic we wanted to throw at him and we saw a side of a conference speaker we are usually denied! He was asked about his favourite films, music and artistic interests and the interaction was enriched by the participation of his artist wife, Sarah.
I must admit I am a conference avoider by choice, but No Longer! After this year's CMS Summer School at Port Sorell and now this 50+ Bible Convention: I'll be there!
This was an interdenominational initiative and these opportunities need to be encouraged.
The conference was held at an excellent venue, well located and equally accessible to the far South and the far North West with excellent catering by a sympathetic management. The conference was chaired by Peter Atkins assisted by his wife Ruth and organised by John Janson, Ray and Lesley Metcalfe.
