Building and mission

There are key questions asked of parish councils.

Over the last few months the Diocese has considered requests from parishes regarding buildings. Some buildings have been sold and some purchased. There have been a couple of new constructions and a range of renovations/extensions.

On each occasion the challenge for the parish council has been to be aware of the immediate need and consider the longer term implications. The proper use of building resources can enable or limit activities.

As you wrestle with building issues I commend to you Michael Frost's book Exiles: living missionally in a post-Christian culture. (Hendrickson, 2006) He presents a refreshing perspective on current trends.

The key question asked of parish councils is 'How will any building proposal assist the mission of the parish?'

Relating building use to mission purposes is crucial.

The Mission Action Plan (MAP) resource folder is a useful tool in responding to the question. (If you can't find your folder then let me know and I'll send you one.)

In the coming year the Diocesan Council will be working with parishes to complete a comprehensive listing of all our properties. This database will provide information for planning, insurance and heritage value.

Yes, the mission of God is about more than buildings but buildings are resources available to use and we need to use them wisely.

Please thank God for the gift of buildings and the way they assist us in our mission and ministry. Also ask God to give a spirit of discernment to the leadership of our church so that the right decisions are made.

Regards,
Chris
