Tasmania is in the grip of an affordable housing crisis with very little affordable housing available for over 2700 Tasmanians on the public housing waiting list.
We need to find new ways to house Tasmanians on low-incomes and one of the ways the State Government is doing this is by transforming buildings into suitable accommodation.
Anglicare's supported accommodation facility in the North-West, Burnie Lodge, is now approaching full occupancy with two more residents moving into the last available rooms.
It is an exciting time for our accommodation workers on the North-West Coast, who have worked hard to make Burnie Lodge a preferred choice for Tasmanians on low incomes.
This means that 29 people who were previously homeless have found accommodation that suits their needs.
Burnie Lodge provides communal accommodation for Tasmanians on low incomes.
Burnie Lodge resident * Tom said, 'we get our own room that we can decorate how we want, almost like having a unit to ourselves. Most of the time everyone gets on.'
A support worker lives on-site and three meals a day are provided in a communal dining area.
The success of Burnie Lodge in providing accommodation to Tasmanians who would otherwise have no place to stay demonstrates how powerful government funding for supported accommodation can be.
Anglicare operates two other supported accommodation facilities in Tasmania - Indigo Lodge in Launceston and the recently opened Bilton Lodge, a new supported accommodation facility in Hobart.
Our hope is that Tasmanians on low incomes will see these supported accommodation facilities as somewhere they feel they can make a home.
Anglicare's supported accommodation is operated as part of the State Government's Affordable Housing Strategy.
