Watching with gladness

Some thoughts on my son's wedding day,
based on Genesis 2, 24

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

We watched you come.
Born to us in summer's heat.
Beloved son, a gift from God,
Loaned to us to teach His ways.

We watched you grow
And through the fleeting days of childhood pass.
First unsteady steps and halting words,
Too soon a lanky schoolboy grown
Yet quick to learn and full of kindness.

We watched love blossom.
Tender at first, like springtime flowers
Reaching up to touch the sun.
Then strong and deep it grew
Like two sweet notes in harmony.

We watch you leave
Yet gladly cut the ties that bind.
For through our loss we gain anew.
Beloved son and daughter now,
Joined in that most holy bond
That speaks of Christ and His church.
