A Poem for Good Friday

The Last Word

Tetelestai! It is finished,
Not groaned in death — but victory’s shout!
Not life snuffed out — but mighty work complete.
Ugly, bloody, naked death — a masterpiece
To transform life as none before nor since.

Above the bloodied nails and wood
Above the darkness — dazzling radiance
Perfect obedience — perfect love
History fulfilled.
Hopes, promises, expectations,
Disappointments, sorrows, failures, of all ages;
Bound in one moment of time
At the Cross — Cross-road,
Place of turning — to change direction:
Fear to hope — hate to love — rage to forgiveness
Death to life.

All roads lead here, but two away
The masterpiece complete — Tetelestai.
Now two roads beckon,
We must choose
Darkness or light — death or life.

Tetelestai Greek, meaning 'it is finished', according to John, Jesus’ last word from the cross.
