BBQ on the lawns

If you have driven down Macquarie Street in Hobart, past St David’s Cathedral on a Friday afternoon you may have wondered why the grassy space between the entrance to the Cloisters and the Diocesan Offices looks more like a party venue.

St David’s have been using this space to provide a meeting place for the young people of Hobart with a ‘BBQ on the Lawns’ on Friday afternoons and Anglicare has provided financial support for ongoing costs through a parish grant.

‘BBQ on the Lawns’ is an opportunity for the Cathedral community to build relationships with the students who get off the bus – to share the good news of Jesus with them. Getting to know the students is a worthwhile process and the food provides the conversation starter.

This creative initiative began in September last year and each week, weather permitting, leaders make contact with over a 100 students who appreciate the care and concern, especially on a cold winter Friday afternoon.
