New book - Love in Action
God's Love in Action: Pastoral Care for Everyone by Jill McGilvray. Published by Acorn Press 2009. RRP $19.95
Pastoral care for everyone
In the introduction to her new book Jill McGilvray tells the story of a young child terrified by the thunder and lightning. The mother’s response is to remind her that God is with her and loves her.
To this the child replies, ‘I know that...but I need love with skin on.’
This book has some excellent examples of how everyone can learn about ‘Love with skin on’. Designed for those wanting to develop skills in caring for others in a church community, the principles presented here have much broader applications.
Of particular note is the emphasis on not just caring for others, but also caring for the carers. This can often be overlooked, leading to burnout and disappointment.
Topics covered include learning about your own skills; using Scripture and prayer appropriately; caring in particular situations such as illness, dementia, depression, abuse; the special needs of men; bereavement and grief; and families of those in need. There is a list of useful books for further reading.
This book is structured so that it can be used by individuals or in a small group setting. The material would divide well into a weekly training course over four weeks.
The author has extensive experience as a Pastoral and Seniors’ worker at St Matthew’s Anglican Church West Pennant Hills NSW, and as a Bereavement Counsellor at the National Centre for Childhood Grief.
