For some years the Mothers’ Union of St Stephen’s Sandy Bay has celebrated Mothers’ Day, as does the rest of the community.

On the Saturday morning prior to Mothers’ Day each year members collect what flowers they can find from their gardens and meet together. They form small posies wrapped in plastic, tied up with ribbon with a small card with the words ‘In Praise of Mothers’. The aim is to make enough for each person attending each of the three services at our two churches in the parish to receive a posy.

Last year we also invited donations for a special appeal for mosquito nets for babies in Africa, hoping that some mothers there might be spared the grief of losing a child to malaria. This was very successful.
