Remembering St Luke
St Luke's Church, Judbury
Patronal festival at St Luke's, Judbury
On 18 October St Luke's, Judbury celebrated its patronal festival. Part of the Franklin Parish the small wooden church is now 54 years old.
St Luke was an evangelist and a physician. Material found in his Gospel and nowhere else includes much of the account of our Lord's birth, infancy and boyhood, some of the most moving parables, such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son.
We find an emphasis on the human love of Christ, on his compassion for sinners, for suffering and for the outcasts such as the Samaritans, tax collectors, lepers, shepherds and for the poor.
The role of women in Christ's ministry is more emphasised in Luke’s telling than in the other Gospels. St Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles and he travelled with St Paul on his missionary journeys.
The Order of St Luke is named after the physician because of the author's emphasis on the human love of Christ through healing those who were in need spiritually, emotionally and physically.
The Prayer of the Order of St Luke is the Collect set for the saint’s day on 18 October.
‘Almighty God, who inspired your servant, Saint Luke the Physician, to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son, manifest in your Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls; through the same your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen’
