Much-travelled cross

The cross has been the symbol of a Christian's allegiance to Christ since the earliest days of the Church.

Last month, Pam and Andrew Lake took with them to Syria a small, silver baptismal cross.

Lancelot Dudley, a former Archdeacon of Hobart, had this cross with him when he served with CMS in India, later passing it to John and Helen van Emmerik.

The van Emmeriks brought it back from Africa after their term with CMS on that continent and in turn passed it to Sue and Russell Morton.

The little cross travelled with the Mortons to Pakistan when they served there with CMS.

At the Lakes' commissioning, the congregation heard,

'As this cross has symbolised for all these people both the content and the empowerment for the Gospel they bear, so may it represent your loyalty to and dependence on Christ our crucified Saviour during your ministry in Syria.'
